Stephanie Niemer: Advice For The First Time Overseas

My advice to someone who is going to play overseas for the first time would be to have an open mind and not to take things too seriously.  Stressing about the little inconveniences of living in another country (or island) or worrying about being “released” for one match of poor performance will take the fun out of the experience.  It is easy to get stressed because it is a JOB and you want to do your best, but bad matches are inevitable.  We are lucky to be able to play the sport we love for a living.  Enjoy every minute of it while you are still able to play, travel, and experience another culture all at the same time.  I would also recommend keeping a journal.  I just started writing recollections of my first 4 seasons this year.  There are so many  moments that were once frustrating and basically unbelievable, but now I find them priceless and hilarious.
